FELLOWSHIP OVERVIEW:
The Science of Care Institute and the Centre for Nursing Excellence at Sinai Health seek a Registered Nurse who is PhD-prepared for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellow position - subject to renewal contingent upon funding and academic productivity. The position will focus on evaluating models of care and nursing services and co-designing innovative solutions including leadership competency development to improve equitable access to and quality of fundamental care across the healthcare spectrum (e.g. primary, acute, complex continuing care, rehabilitation, and ambulatory) using an integrated approach drawing from implementation, improvement, innovation and team science. There will also be opportunities to engage in practice-based research, innovation capacity-building learning initiatives, and patient and care partner engagement strategies.
ORGANIZATION AND DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
This role will be housed at the Centre for Nursing Excellence within the Science of Care Institute at Sinai Health. The Science of Care Institute is located on the beautiful Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital campus of Sinai Health. It advances discoveries and innovation in how care is co-designed, implemented, and measured. The Science of Care Institute is in a growth trajectory that builds on a strong foundation of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, clinician-scientists, and trainees affiliated with Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) working together to produce high-quality research to drive health system transformation. LTRI is a University of Toronto-affiliated research centre and one of the world's leading biomedical and health systems research centres. Our Science of Care Institute and affiliated Centre for Nursing Excellence and LTRI are committed to excellence in health research and the training of emerging investigators. Strong partnerships with the clinical programs in our hospitals and our health system partners ensure that scientific knowledge is used to promote human health and health system improvement. As Canada’s only Magnet-designated hospital, we are committed to nurse-led research and innovation to exceed the Magnet standard related to New Knowledge and innovation. Sinai Health was redesignated as a Magnet Hospital in December 2020, meeting all the required standards.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigators (PIs), Drs Lianne Jeffs and Marianne Saragosa. In addition to pursuing an independent line of inquiry within the respective Scientists’ research programs, the fellow may also support ongoing projects that align with Dr. Jeffs' research program on organizational learning and system performance and Dr. Saragosa’s research program on aging-in-place and care of older adults through integrated health care systems.
Part of the learning experience will involve supporting junior staff and learners and participating in Science of Care learning initiatives. This will require the fellow to work with a diverse group of project co-investigators, research staff, trainees/students, collaborators, clinicians, leaders, and policy makers. The candidate will have opportunities to attend appropriate training, conferences, and symposia (based on additional funding) and work with an internationally recognized team of researchers.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and initiate an independent research plan over the post-doctoral fellowship (1-2 years), including identifying new lines of inquiry within the PI’s and Science of Care Institute’s work streams.
- Support all steps in developing and pursuing a research study, including developing a research question, methods, knowledge synthesis, protocol development, ethics applications, organizing and collecting data, and analysis. Coordinate with the research staff to support these activities.
- Support and lead publications, report writing, and other knowledge translation activities (e.g., workshops, symposia, newsletters, website content) related to the candidate's research question. The candidate may also support publications and sub-studies on other ongoing projects led by the PIs.
- The candidate must also apply for relevant projects (e.g. operating grants; planning, dissemination and planning grant) and salary support grants.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- PhD degree required (within the past three years) or scheduled defense date
- Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario or becomes eligible prior to assuming Post-doctoral position
- Experience working directly with patients, care partners and healthcare providers
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
- High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientated; ability to take responsibility in meeting deadlines.
- A high degree of comfort with change and the ability to adapt as the project evolves in two large, complex health systems and their health technologies.
- Strong relational and collaboration skills and ability to exert influence and work across sectors (hospitals, primary care, and community).
- Ability to work independently and without direct supervision and problem-solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the research.
- Knowledge and experience in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office programs. Experience with research software, including EndNote and NVivo, is an asset.
- High-level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Must exhibit high professionalism, judgement, ethical conduct, discretion and diplomacy.
The successful candidate will have a strong record of academic achievement during their doctoral studies and evidence of scholarly outputs such as peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Applicants should have a strong interest in implementation science, models of care, and knowledge mobilization and translation. Emerging track record of securing funding for research is an asset.
