REPORTS TO  Director, Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Liaison

Organization Overview:

Sinai Health is a leading academic health science centre and a trailblazer for integrated care across the health continuum. Our fusion of science, innovation, care and learning has earned us international, national and provincial leadership for unique programs and compassionate care. Since 2015, Sinai Health has delivered excellent care in hospital, community and home.

Comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and our system partner Circle of Care, Sinai Health discovers and translates scientific breakthroughs, pushes boundaries for health solutions, and educates future clinical and scientific leaders.

The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, a University of Toronto affiliated research centre, is one of the world's leading centres in biomedical research. With ground-breaking discoveries in research areas such as diabetes, genetic disorders, cancer and women’s and infants’ health, the Institute is committed to excellence in health research and the training of young investigators. Strong partnerships with the clinical programs of Mount Sinai Hospital ensure that scientific knowledge is used to promote human health.  Your significant contributions will assist in maintaining our momentum in advancing our research.

Department Overview:

The Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Liaison develops effective interactions with the corporate sector and other research and health care institutions to: enhance the research, clinical and educational programs of the Hospital; promote the application of new information and technology to the promotion of wellness, the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease; and to generate funds to support the goals of the Hospital.

Our Services:

  • Intellectual Property: The Office is responsible for identifying, evaluating and protecting intellectual property arising from laboratory based and clinical research programs. This involves filing patent applications where appropriate and taking action to protect confidential information.
  • Commercialization: To transfer technologies to the marketplace. This process involves either licensing technologies for use by other organizations, or the creation of spin-off companies.
  • Contract Negotiation: Responsible for ensuring that the rights of Sinai Health System staff are protected in legal contracts relating to licenses, material transfers, confidentiality, intellectual property, sponsored research and research collaborations.

Position Overview:

We have been recording, since approximately November 2023, short descriptions of how files behave—what kinds of problems arise in the progression of work when an assigned reviewer negotiates some kind of research-related agreement—as they move through the contract review process. We currently have approximately 300 narrations. These descriptions range in length from ~15 words to ~150 words.

The intent is to use them to nuance quantitative metrics of file completion timelines with qualitative descriptors that are systematically applied. This job entails contributing to a project using Dedoose to analyze those ~300 narrations in order to determine what kinds of themes exist. The goal is to [1] better quantify the types of file delays we experience, and [2] develop codes that can be built into the file management system so that, each time a reviewer completes a file, they can tag its metadata / “quality of behaviour” using a prepopulated drop-down menu.

This position will be a hybrid role (1-2 days).

Responsibilities:

  • Importing the dataset to Dedoose, setting up the attributes—likely to include some data cleaning
  • Coding once, working with the Project Coordinator on revisions to the coding book, and then recoding the data
  • Performing descriptive statistics both related to the actual findings and to how the findings contribute to the metadata framework/language/descriptors
  • Presenting findings on both the trends in the data itself and on how the findings contribute to the metadata framework/language/descriptors
  • Assisting with the writing of the theory and methodology portions of a paper to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal (most likely the Journal of Research Administration, which is peer-reviewed); the successful candidate will be named as an author
  • Writing text for the analysis/findings sections of the RJA article
  • Editing and proofreading
  • Drafting other brief dissemination content (e.g., infographics, blog posts)

Requirements:

  • Active enrollment in a post-secondary degree/diploma. Second to third year students are preferred.
  • Experience with qualitative research, ideally working knowledge of Dedoose
  • Knowledge of descriptive statistics
  • Experience working on or writing surveys (an asset, but not a requirement)
  • Have good attention to detail
  • Good communication skills
  • Can keep track of assigned tasks and follow them through to completion; capable of working to deadline
  • Works independently
  • Well-organized

In accordance with Institute’s policy and legislated health and safety requirements, employment is conditional upon the verification of credentials, completion of a health review, and demonstrating proof of immunity and vaccination status of vaccine-preventable diseases. All employees and affiliates will follow safe work practices and comply with health and safety policies, procedures, and training. Successful candidates will be required to provide two (2) written reference letters from their former employer(s)/supervisor(s).

We are fully committed to fairness and equity in employment and our recruitment and selection practices. We encourage applications from Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, members of racialized groups, women and any others who may contribute to the further diversification of our Sinai Health community. Accommodation will be provided in all parts of the hiring process as required under our Access for People with Disabilities policy. Applicants need to make their requirements known in advance.

The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute is a scent sensitive environment, and all members of the community are expected to refrain from wearing or using scented products while visiting or working at the Institute. We also support a barrier-free workplace supported by the Institute’s accessibility plan, accommodation and disability management policies and procedures. Should you require accommodation at any point during the recruitment process, including accessible job postings, please contact the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Human Resources Department.
