Program Overview:
The Sinai Health Summer Scholars Program in Geriatrics provides an opportunity for students to engage in research and quality-improvement projects focused on the care of older adults. The program is designed for students with an interest in geriatric medicine, health services research, and inclusive healthcare education. Selected students will gain hands-on experience in research design, data collection, analysis, and knowledge translation.

Available Projects:
1. Medical Oncology in Older Adults
Description: Opportunities exist across multiple studies, including:
- Prospective data collection of patients seen in the geriatric oncology clinic.
- Randomized trial of geriatric assessment versus remote symptom monitoring in older men with metastatic prostate cancer.
- Implementation study of electronic self-geriatric assessment.
- Study examining access issues in racialized older adults with cancer.
- AI-based chemotherapy toxicity prediction.
Student Contributions (depending on project):
- Defining project question and scope
- Performing/updating literature review
- Preparing protocols for ethics submission
- Patient recruitment and study-specific assessments (e.g., questionnaires, interviews)
- Data extraction, cleaning, and basic statistical analysis
- Preparing abstracts and manuscripts for conferences or publication
Preferred Skills: Interest in clinical research, quantitative/qualitative methods, and oncology or geriatric care.
2. HIV and Older Adults
Description: Students will contribute to projects focused on HIV medication reviews, long-term care, and understanding the intersection of HIV care and aging.
Student Contributions:
- Literature review and protocol preparation
- Data collection and analysis
- Writing abstracts and manuscripts
Preferred Skills: Background in public health, HIV care, or geriatrics; experience with quantitative or qualitative methods.
3. Improving Alternate Level of Care (ALC) Processes
Description: This quality-improvement project examines drivers of inappropriate ALC designation among hospitalized older adults, care planning, and system-level barriers, with the goal of improving patient-centered care and hospital flow.
Student Contributions:
- Literature search and synthesis
- Data abstraction/chart review
- Qualitative methods (e.g., interviews, thematic analysis)
- Supporting development of targeted interventions
Preferred Skills: Interest in quality improvement, health services research, or hospital-based geriatric care.
4. Co-Designing an Inclusive Geriatric Healthcare Curriculum
Description: Develop a comprehensive, evidence-informed curriculum integrating equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles for geriatric healthcare education. Students will support co-design workshops, data collection, and analysis to create culturally responsive training for future healthcare providers.
Student Contributions:
- Conducting and analyzing focus groups/interviews
- Participating in co-design workshops
- Thematic analysis and use of NVivo or similar software
- Supporting curriculum development and manuscript preparation
Preferred Skills: Experience in qualitative research, thematic analysis, co-design methods, or EDI-focused projects.
5. Evaluating the Long-Term Impact of the Healthy Ageing and Geriatrics Summer Scholars Program
Description: This project evaluates the long-term impact of the Sinai Health Summer Scholars program on participants’ academic and career trajectories. Surveys will be analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods, with findings informing program improvements and scholarly outputs.
Student Contributions:
- Analyze survey results using qualitative and quantitative methods
- Thematic analysis and manuscript preparation
- Support knowledge translation of findings
Preferred Skills: Experience in qualitative research, thematic analysis, NVivo or similar software; prior research experience is an asset.
General Requirements for All Applicants:

Pay rate: $17.60/hr
