The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute of Sinai Health System, a University of Toronto affiliated research centre, is one of the world's leading centres in biomedical research. With ground-breaking discoveries in research areas such as diabetes, genetic disorders, cancer and women’s and infants’ health, the Institute is committed to excellence in health research and the training of young investigators. Strong partnerships with the clinical programs of Sinai Health System ensure that scientific knowledge is used to promote human health. Your significant contributions will assist in maintaining our momentum in advancing our research.
Position Overview:
We are excited to invite a dedicated and proactive clinical research assistant to play a critical role in a large, international, multi-institutional study focused on developing an artificial intelligence model to predict which men are at high risk of harbouring clinically significant prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer in men and a major public concern worldwide.
As a clinical research assistant, you will work closely with the principal and co-investigators of this project. The primary role will involve abstracting information from the electronic health records. Additional roles may include data cleaning and basic statistical analyses. Your contributions will help generate the largest prostate biopsy dataset in the world and advance the use of artificial intelligence to help personalize clinical decision-making in prostate cancer detection. The goal is to revolutionize and personalize the way we diagnose clinically significant prostate cancer using the power of artificial intelligence and large, international databases. If you're ready to be part of a dedicated team that drives ground-breaking research, we look forward to receiving your application!
Responsibilities:
- Data abstraction: Collect relevant information from clinical notes, laboratory values, MRI reports, and prostate biopsy reports from the electronic medical records. Prior experience with PowerChart or EPIC will be an asset, but not required. The applicant will be trained on how to abstract data by a member of the project team. Bi-weekly to monthly meetings will be held with a member of the project team to address any questions related to data abstraction.
- Data cleaning: Re-review previously collected data to ensure accuracy of abstracted information. This process will be similar to data abstraction.
- Basic statistical analysis: Generate summary statistics (i.e., Table 1) for the study cohorts.
- Assist Research Coordinator: assist the research coordinator in various tasks related to this project including: gathering/submitting documents to the Research Ethics Board, gathering/submitting documents for granting agencies, assisting with the coordination/communication with different centres for data acquisition, assist in writing emails related to this project, other administrative tasks related to the smooth movement of this project.
- Flexibility in work hours and location: The start and completion time of the workday will vary depending on how quickly the applicant takes to abstract data. The applicant can work remotely. Our primary expectation is for the applicant to complete approximately 75-100 patients per day and ensure data abstraction is accurate.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in medical sciences or related degrees
- A strong background in clinical research and a keen interest in prostate cancer
- Prior experience with PowerChart or EPIC is an asset
- Familiarity with data collection and management techniques
- Team player and full commitment to complete the outlined responsibilities
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic research environment and work effectively in a team setting
