Job Description:

Sinai Health System is looking for a Building Maintenance Technician to support their 25 Orde St building located on the campus of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto’s Discovery District. 25 Orde is a standalone biomedical research building housing labs and support spaces from Mount Sinai’s Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI), and The Centre for Phenogenomics (TCP), a state-of-the-art mouse research facility associated with Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) and The Hospital for Sick Children.

Reporting directly to the Building Engineer, the Building Maintenance Technician will be responsible for general and preventative maintenance and for efficient operation of building equipment in the 25 Orde Building. This is a full-time position that requires the successful candidate to work on-site 5 days a week, execute on-call shifts, as well as occasional after-hours work and weekends. 

 

Responsibilities:

The Building Maintenance Technician is responsible for keeping the facility operating and addressing any problems as they are discovered. The Building Operator is required to perform a wide range of tasks around the facility including:

  • Operate and maintain all building systems and equipment, including but not limited to, HVAC, chillers, cooling towers, emergency diesel generator, security, life & safety, medical gas, steam and sterilization, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Maintain all auxiliary equipment in accordance with governing standards, codes and regulations.
  • Monitor and control building operations through the Siemens Building Automation system.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and regular repairs with minimum supervision.
  • Adjusts thermostats, valves, dampers, etc. to maintain desired conditions.
  • Perform maintenance of mechanical equipment as outlined on the Preventative Maintenance Program including belt adjustments, lubrication, filter changes etc.
  • Oversee subordinate employees, contractors and service personnel.
  • Assist with other duties related to the position as assigned.

 

Customer Service/Quality

  • Communicates regularly and effectively with technicians, researchers, building operators, and Sinai Health Maintenance Technicians.  

Health and Safety

  • Follows safe work practices and complies with the roles and responsibilities that are outlined with respect to health and safety policies, procedures and training at Mount Sinai Hospital (e.g. WHIMS, etc.).
  • Reports all accidents, unsafe conditions, security incidents to management.

Attendance

  • Follows Hospital’s Attendance Policy, Department Scheduling and call-in procedures.

Appearance

  • Ensures Identification Security Badges are up-to-date, working and visible at all times.

Teamwork

  • Works collaboratively with other team members to provide the highest quality service.
  • Carries out all duties as assigned during the shift.

All employees are to act in a manner consistent with all Mount Sinai Hospital policies and procedures that may be amended from time to time.

 

Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of a high school diploma.
  • Successful graduate of BES classification or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years in a maintenance role environment, demonstrated experience as a maintenance technician/building operator.
  • Hospital or research building operations experience preferred.
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing background will be an asset.
  • Ability to understand the usage of Mechanical, Electrical and Control schematics.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical and HVAC schematic drawings.
  • Demonstrated computer skills an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated current knowledge and competency in regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history.
  • Responsible, self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Must be proficient in English, both oral and written.

 


Safety Requirement

  • Maintain personal certifications as required by Safety Office
  • Maintain the lab’s Safety requirements as required by Safety Office
  • Maintain current lab-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - including work with hazardous chemicals and biological agents, hazardous waste disposal, etc.
  • Maintain the lab’s chemical Inventory
  • Responsible for training the lab members on lab-specific procedures, weekly eye wash checks

In accordance with Institute’s policy and legislated health and safety requirements, employment is conditional upon the verification of credentials, completion of a health review, and demonstrating proof of immunity and vaccination status of vaccine-preventable diseases. All employees and affiliates will follow safe work practices and comply with health and safety policies, procedures, and training. Successful candidates will be required to provide two (2) written reference letters from their former employer(s)/supervisor(s).

A recent Provincial Directive mandates all employees of public hospitals in Ontario to be either fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or be regularly tested. All new employees joining Sinai Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and be on track toward full vaccination within six (6) weeks; participating in mandatory twice weekly Rapid Antigen Testing Program until fully vaccinated. There are very limited circumstances in which approval will be given for a medical exemption from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
