POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Junior Linux Systems Administrator, LTRI, will play a multi-faceted role in the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, one of the world’s foremost biomedical research institutes.   This role will work closely with the entire Systems Administration team, to design and implement Linux operating systems and applications, supporting High Performance Computing Cluster users and developers, troubleshooting problems with applications, operating systems, implementing AI infrastructure, providing security analysis and hardening of systems. There will also be extensive contact with implementing and diagnosing computing hardware.  This position is based in downtown Toronto, Ontario. This is a fast paced learning position, and will require that the candidate be onsite during work hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Junior Linux Systems Administrator will have primary responsibility for but not limited to the following:

Linux Server Administration:

  • Assist in design, installation, administration, operation, maintenance, monitoring, upgrade, security, and technical analysis/troubleshooting for the following systems:
    • Web Servers: Running Apache/HTTP with PHP/PYTHON/MYSQL/POSTGRES. Primary responsibilities include maintenance, trouble-shooting and ensuring 24 x 7 availability for user groups. Must be competent with DMZ security protocols and measures
    • Mass Spectrometry Servers: Running a combination of Linux and Windows 7/2003-Server. Primary responsibilities include maintenance, trouble-shooting and ensuring 24 x 7 availability for user groups
    • DNA Sequencing Servers: Running Linux with large local storage. Primary responsibilities include maintenance, trouble-shooting and ensuring 24 x 7 availability for user groups
    • Protein Structure Servers: Dedicated linux servers with multi-GPU hardwares. Responsibilities will include maintenance, troubleshooting, and hardware upgrades.
    • AI Servers: Investigate and implement operating systems, hardware and software necessary to support scientific staff on machine learning projects.
    • Backup Servers: Stand-alone NAS Servers in the hundreds of Terabytes running Linux with ZFS as primary backup. Primary responsibilities include design and monitoring of backup strategies, moving of large amounts of data and developing strategies for long-term data retention

HPC Cluster Administration:

  • Assist in design, installation, administration, operation, maintenance, monitoring, upgrade, security, and technical analysis/troubleshooting for the following systems:
    • HPC Clusters: Consisting of multi-vendor compute nodes with thousands cores running Linux. Primary responsibilities include HW/SW upgrading, daily operation, user support, project planning and consulting, performance tuning and trouble-shooting, vendor relationship management, asset acquisition and procurement assistance.
    • Maintaining and monitoring of user accounts, quotas, and software
    • Management and configuration of SGE, TORQUE/MAUI, NFS
    • Evaluation and testing of new technologies
    • Deployment of patches, and tools.
    • Programming in an administrative language (bash, perl, or python) for task automation
    • Computing performance management and systems configuration tuning
    • Interoperation/networking between other systems

Shared/Distributed Storage System Administration:

  • Assist in design, installation, administration, operation, maintenance, upgrade, security, and technical analysis/troubleshooting for the following systems:
    • Shared/Distributed Storage System: consisting of 8 Isilon X400 nodes approaching 1 Petabyte
    • Must be able to understand user needs and modify system as needed
    • Maintaining and monitoring of user accounts, quotas, and software
    • Maintenance, monitoring, and configuration for maximum aggregate throughput
    • Deployment of patches, and tools such as NFS and Samba
    • Network management, maintenance, and monitoring.

Computing Infrastructure Security:

  • secure existing systems, and perform periodic security analysis on systems and network
  • take part in security discussions and implement policies
  • implement network access controls
  • implement and maintain internal bridging firewalls
  • implement log monitoring and log analysis strategies
  • daily maintenance and monitoring of Azure cloud presence
  • monitor and maintain email filtering
  • monitor and maintain endpoint antiviral/malware detection systems
  • develop, maintain, and monitor ransomware defensive strategies

Helpdesk Support:

  • duties will include day-to-day first line help desk support and workload will depend on level of skills/knowledge and fluctuating staffing levels

 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Preferably a completion of University degree or College equivalent, or a combination of experience and education.

  • At least 2-3 years experience in Linux Systems Administration
  • Extensive knowledge of Linux is required
  • Preference will be given towards those with High Performance Computing (HPC) experience
  • Preference will be given towards those with a (life) sciences background
  • Preference will be given to those with Linux certifications such as RHCSA or RHCE
  • Preference will be given to those with exposure and understanding of A.I./Machine Learning technologies
  • Must be able to design, plan, and implement Linux based systems as part of larger research infrastructure in consideration of future assessed needs
  • Knowledge and experience with Linux based operating systems such as: CentOS, RedHat, FreeBSD and Ubuntu
  • Knowledge and experience in the management of day-to-day operations of stand-alone NAS storage servers in the hundreds of Terabytes to Petabytes range
  • Understanding of HPC concepts as related to high-throughput storage environments.
  • Strong scripting skills in either bash, Perl, or Python
  • Understanding and experience with the following file-systems: ext3, ext4, ZFS, XFS, and/or OneFS.
  • Familiarity with SGE, TORQUE/MAUI, OPENPBS or any other HPC batch scheduling software
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking and security concepts – including experience with firewalls (linux iptables, Juniper), familiarity with selinux, 10 Gbe or Infiniband, network monitoring, packet sniffing
  • Strong understanding and experience with RAID, NFS, Samba, LDAP, RSYNC, APACHE/HTTP, installation of OS though Kickstart, GRUB, LILO, SSH, FTP, CRON
  • Strong understanding of standard server hardware. Must be comfortable in assembling or disassembling in-house, custom-built servers.
  • Strong understanding of patch management, and multi-agency security advisory alerts
  • Good understanding and experience with relational databases such as MySQL or POSTGRES and web languages such as PHP, PERL, and PYTHON.
  • Experience with scientific software such as SAS, R, Matlab, Mascot, and other genomic software is a strong asset
  • An understanding of Microsoft Windows and Apple technologies is an asset
  • Understanding of the scientific and research environment is an asset
  • Attentive to detail, extremely well-organized and excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with researchers to implement computing solutions
  • Must be able to work on site or remotely
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Manage of IT, LTRI
  • Strong work ethics. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
