Position Description

Talented PhD scientists with relevant postdoctoral experience are invited to apply for an independent research scientist position focused on microbiology, microbiota, and diet related to the biology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The appointment as a translational research scientist is an initial fixed term of 5 years.

We seek applicants who will develop an innovative, outstanding and independent program combining clinical and translational platforms in Nutrition, Microbiology and Immunology focused on IBD. The ideal candidate will demonstrate their ability to conduct research effectively in collaboration with clinicians who manage IBD patients and clinician scientists involved in IBD research, as well as with scientists with other relevant skills. The focus is on studies of the interplay between diet, intestinal microbiota, and gut inflammation as they help define the pathogenesis of IBD and develop intervention strategies for the treatment or prevention of disease.

The successful candidate will join the IBD Center at Mount Sinai Hospital, as part of the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine. We are a major regional referral destination for all aspects of IBD care, with over 3000 patient visits per year. The IBD center encompasses multidisciplinary expertise in Gastroenterology and Colorectal surgery. Mount Sinai Hospital is part of Sinai Health, a fully-affiliated teaching hospital with the University of Toronto and is associated with the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, an institute of international recognition in research.

The successful applicant will be appointed to the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and must be eligible for a Status-Only faculty appointment in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. The candidate will be expected to secure an appointment at the school of graduate studies. The successful candidate will also be provided with a Translational Clinical Scientist status at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should hold a relevant PhD and have demonstrated a productive post-doctoral career defined by their record of relevant peer-reviewed publications and evidence of external funding. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in microbiology and nutrition.

The applicant should have extensive experience in applying next-generation sequencing for the analysis of microbiome composition and function and should show evidence of advanced statistical analysis of multi-omic complex data sets.

The applicant shall also have demonstrated experience in working with mouse models of colitis. Their experience in developing and fostering a multidisciplinary team of scientists and their experience in supervising advanced clinical and PhD trainees will be essential.
