POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP OVERVIEW:

A two-year postdoctoral fellowship position is available for an individual who has completed their PhD within the past 5 years and can co-lead a program to identify, study and build capacity for best practices in caring for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Our goal is to create new knowledge and disseminate best practices for interdisciplinary and integrated care for patients and families living with dementia across Canada.  

The SPIRIT (Stober Program in Research, Innovation and Training) program will provide critical resources for ongoing research initiatives in dementia care and enable the development of a novel, integrated and interdisciplinary academic program that unites Sinai Health's diverse expertise in psychiatry, geriatrics, internal medicine and palliative care.

 

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

The Divisions of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Palliative Care at Sinai Health provide specialized medical care for people living with chronic terminal illnesses. Sinai Health is home to both the Reitman Centre for Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support and Training and the Enhancing Care Program, which provides dementia caregiver support services across Ontario. In addition, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, a University of Toronto affiliated research centre, is one of the world's leading institutes in biomedical research. PROJECT AND POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will work under the supervision of Drs Kieran Quinn, Nathan Stall, and Lesley Wiesenfeld at Mount Sinai Hospital on an innovative new initiative aiming to improve the dementia care through novel training opportunities and scholarship focused on patient and caregiver experience, decision-making and illness-navigation. The results of our program will provide evidence-based recommendations and models of care for medical practice in the care of people living with dementia and their caregivers. The Postdoctoral Fellow will oversee the planning, management, and execution of program road-mapping, intervention development and clinical studies. This will require the fellow to work independently and effectively with a diverse group of Principal Investigators, research staff, program administrators, health system leaders and policy makers to ensure projects’ activities and milestones are met.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the scientific and administrative domains of the SPIRIT program. It is anticipated that the PDF will lead components of the work, with mentorship and supervision provided by the Principal Investigators.
  • Conduct research activities using strategic healthcare tools such as environmental scans, asset mapping, journey mapping, and others as relevant.
  • Organize and collect data (patient/caregiver interviews, surveys, observations, working groups) and coordinate other research staff and graduate students in these efforts.
  • Apply for research funding to support ongoing postdoctoral fellowship (e.g., CIHR, etc.).
  • Lead the writing of manuscripts and reports as well as supporting other knowledge translation activities (e.g., symposia, stakeholder meetings, website content) and grant proposal submissions.
  • Help establish communication and study processes to maximize the reach of the program.
  • Plan and implement ethics submissions and ensure compliance with policies, operating plans and processes documentations as per the hospitals polices and guidelines.
  • Ensure effective human resource allocation through recruitment, training performance, and oversee operating budget.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD degree in Sciences, Public Health, or a Health Services Research, or related field.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Subject matter expertise in the field of research relevant dementia and caregiving.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in an innovative and highly collaborative team environment.
  • High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation; ability to take responsibility in meeting deadlines.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and workload as projects evolve.
  • Ability to work independently and without direct supervision, problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the research.
  • High level interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in use of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, virtual meeting platforms.
  • Must be able to exhibit a high level of professionalism, judgement, ethical conduct, discretion and diplomacy.
