POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Technician III will independently perform accessioning of service requests, grossing of histology samples, tissue processing and embedding, microtomy and cryo-microtomy, routine and special stains, slide scanning with brightfield and fluorescence, mouse necropsies and organ dissection. The Technician III will provide expert consultation and training to Pathology Core’s clients when required.

Other duties, including assisting with immunohistochemistry, blood and urine biochemistry analysis may also be required, and appropriate training will be provided. The Technician III must adhere to all documentation, regulations, protocols, and procedures of TCP’s Pathology Core and the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to accessioning service requests and data entry into the Pathology Core’s Laboratory Management platform.
  • Perform grossing of fixed tissues, processing + paraffin embedding, cutting of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded and frozen tissue samples.
  • Perform histology staining using manual and automated techniques.
  • Perform slide scanning with brightfield and fluorescence slide scanners
  • Perform appropriate mouse handling, anesthesia, necropsies, blood collection, specific organ dissection, prepare blood and bone marrow smears.
  • Keep Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for lab operations up to date.
  • Perform daily maintenance of histology equipment and troubleshoot any issues that might arise.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of each client's service requirements, providing responsive technical guidance and customized histology solutions to support project objectives.
  • Provide general interpretation of histology stains and educate clients on the results.
  • Independently pursue assay and SOP development.
  • Contribute to accessioning service requests and data entry into the Pathology Core’s Laboratory Information Management System.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A BSc or equivalent training and experience in the life sciences.
  • A minimum of five years of experience with gross pathology and histology procedures: organ dissection, paraffin processing and embedding, paraffin and cryo-microtomy, routine and special histology stains, slide scanning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of embryonic and adult mouse anatomy and histology.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound decision-making principles, maintain a high level of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail with clear documentation practices.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, contributing to an inclusive and respectful team environment.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and timelines, with flexibility to adapt to changes in schedules and needs.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques, solve technical problems, troubleshoot, and optimize standard protocols.
  • Must be able to communicate (verbal and written) information within the team and to users of the facility.
  • Computer and database entry skills.

PREFERRED

  • Experience with immunohistochemistry and/or clinical biochemistry is an asset.
  • Medical Lab Assistant/ Technologist certification by the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists.

     SALARY

      Hourly rate starting at $37.149
