POSITION OVERVIEW

Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute is one of the world’s leading centers in biomedical research. The research activities are focused around understanding the function of human genes and how genetic pathways and environmental factors lead to the development of human diseases. The research programs at Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum make extensive use of genomics, proteomics and related technologies. A Bioinformatician and Data Analyst position is available at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum with a focus on investigation of the underlying genetic susceptibility factors associated with COVID-19. This is an excellent opportunity to conduct cutting-edge bioinformatics research, develop novel methodologies and apply bioinformatics tools in a multidisciplinary setting.

DEPARTMENT/ LAB DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (AMD) at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH), Sinai Health System, is a clinically certified laboratory that conducts molecular diagnostic testing for the Greater Toronto Area and the province of Ontario and serves as an international reference centre for molecular diagnostics.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis packages, maintain and troubleshoot NGS analytical pipelines, and manage mass data storage and backup.
  • Assist group members with machine learning and data mining methods and support diverse data analyses strategies
  • Analyze, interpret and reporting of genetic findings
  • Report development
  • Assist group members with data visualization
  • Managing data transfers
  • Manage computational assets and IT essentials.
  • Maintain or create laboratory databases.
  • Maintain or create laboratory websites

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a B. Sc. In computer science, molecular biology, or bioinformatics; M. Sc. preferred
  • Expertise in scientific languages R and Python required; experience with C++ or JAVA.
  • Training in NGS data analysis packages and pipelines preferred but not essential e.g. GATK best practices
  • Interpreting and reporting genetic variation in relation to the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines for interpreting sequence variation.
  • Interfacing with third party software applications and vendors
  • Fluency with statistics/biostatistics and data mining methods are desired.
  • Strong initiative to carry out independent research on data analysis problems and excellent problem-solving skills is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and inter-disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
