The Advanced Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) is a clinically certified lab that serves as an international reference centre for molecular diagnostics. As an academic medical centre affiliated with the University of Toronto, the department staff are involved in clinical services, teaching/training/education as well as clinical research activities.


The Genetic Counsellor will be responsible for enrolling and obtaining consent forms from study participants, as well as interpreting and returning results for genome sequencing.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing various projects. 


  • Work with local clinics to enroll and consent study participants  for genome sequencing
  • Responsible for  retrieving and sending out samples for research and clinical exome sequencing
  • Collaborate  with Bioinformatician to analyze and interpret genome sequencing results
  • Interpreting and drafting results.
  • Draft and issue reports for genome sequencing and return results to participants
  • Project management – provide oversight of ongoing projects including exome sequencing and data sharing initiatives, e.g. facilitating meetings, planning workload and scheduling
  • Provide necessary ongoing support and education to study participants and their families; identify sources of educational materials, support groups and other community linkages
  • Liaise with internal and external health care providers to ensure continuity of care through counselling, testing, results and follow-up referrals.
  • Maintain confidential and accurate records and ensure completion of databases – data entry.
  • Participate in the ongoing quality improvement activities to improve service and participate in professional development educational programs
  • Research activities related to this work including publication and grant applications


  • M.Sc. /M.A. in Genetic Counselling / CAGC/ABGC Certification or eligibility
  • Comprehensive knowledge of genetic counselling and previous experience working as a genetic counsellor in a medical/clinical genetics setting
  • Demonstrated assessment and counselling skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work efficiently and effectively with other staff members
