POSITION OVERVIEW:

A regular full time position is available in the sequencing facility of the Network Biology Collaborative Centre (nbcc.lunenfeld.ca) at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Mount Sinai Hospital.  The successful candidate will work as part of a team to assist users of the facility with their sequencing experiments.  The candidate will assist with the day-to-day operations of the facility maintaining instrumentation, processing samples and developing new sequencing applications.  The sequencing facility specializes in functional genomics providing end-point readouts for transcriptomics, CRISPR barcoding assays, and single cell sequencing.  The facility is equipped with an Illumina HiSeq 3000 and NextSeq 500.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the day-to-day operation of the sequencing facility.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of facility instruments and equipment.
  • Process samples for users including library preparation, quality control analysis, operation of DNA sequencers and preliminary data analysis.
  • Organize and track user samples and manage queues for instruments.
  • Work as part of a team to develop new sequencing protocols and applications.
  • Procure supplies and competitive quotes, organize and track supplies in the facility.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.Sc. in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline
  •  2 years of laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, DNA and RNA sample preparation
  • Strong experience in preparing samples for sequencing and operation of Illumina sequencers is highly desirable
  • Experience in Linux OS and sequencing bioinformatics will be considered an asset
  • Must be versatile, flexible and self-motivated
  • Must possess exceptional communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) and be comfortable engaging and exchanging information with users of the facility
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail
  • Experience with data management
  •  Demonstrated knowledge of standard software (e.g. LIMS, Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Must demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance record
