The Croitoru laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate mucosal inflammation as it relates to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. In this position the successful applicant will be conducting studies utilizing patient samples to examine the role of the immune system and microbiota in intestinal inflammation.


The Technician II is responsible for performing complex laboratory procedures and experiments.  He/ she/they will usually determine the next phase of testing and experimentation, as well as identify appropriate protocol and techniques under the guidance of the Investigator or Program Manager.  The Technician II may be responsible for his/her/their own project or assist the investigator in the initiation of new research.


  • Independently leads a research project within the group and/or may have specialized expertise or knowledge in a particular field, and performs moderately complex analyses. Interprets test results and experiments.
  • Monitoring and maintaining lab reagent stocks and equipment, including ordering/ maintaining inventories of supplies and/or equipment, budgeting, etc.
  • Collaborates with investigators on preparing research papers, grants, seminars, and presentations
  • Exercises considerable independent judgment, initiative and decision making in consultation with investigator to resolve matters relating to interpretation of test results, modification of techniques and procedures


  • At minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Immunology, or related discipline; Master’s Degree preferred
  • At minimum 1-3 years of research laboratory experience
  • Experience with handling human tissue, blood, and stool an asset
  • Basic molecular biology skills, including PCR, qPCR, ELISA, DNA and RNA extraction, cell isolation
  • Experience with flow cytometry required
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment, exercise considerable independence and take initiative
  • Must possess exceptional communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) and be comfortable engaging and exchanging information with other members of the lab
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving abilities with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Must be flexible with work hours
  • Autonomous critical thinking ability
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required
  • Excellent documentation skills, especially regarding SOP
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new techniques
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Working with laboratory automation robots would be an asset
