Description:  The research technician supports TIBDN and IDERU projects with management of laboratory testing and laboratory samples.  This includes the receipt and processing of laboratory specimens with identification, anti-microbial susceptibility testing, and molecular testing as needed by different projects.  It also includes the creation and maintenance of laboratory and freezer storage databases, identification of appropriate specimens for research requests from collaborators, maintenance of laboratory equipment, inventory management for supplies of personal protective equipment and for phlebotomy and other specimen collection.

Hours: Full-time, temporary. Generally, 08:00 to 16:00 business days; however, due to the nature of the position, must be flexible to work early morning, evening, and weekend hours during peak periods of study activity


  • Receives, unpacks, and sorts incoming specimens
  • Processes specimens as needed, including necessary regular and molecular microbiology tests, storage and freezing, and forwards specimens to referral laboratories as needed.
  • Develops expertise in new regular and molecular microbiology testing for research projects as needed.
  • Assists with the creation of databases for studies, and suggests modifications to laboratory sections of databases as needed.
  • Receives referral laboratory results and enters them in study databases. Identifies potential anomalies and errors, and seeks assistance to identify and correct any problems. Interprets results to research coordinators and other staff.
  • Maintains freezer inventories and monitors freezer performance and maintenance
  • Assists in identifying appropriate samples for collaborating laboratories’ projects
  • Orders and maintains inventory for PPE, laboratory, study phlebotomy and specimen collection equipment for studies.
  • Ensures that appropriate biosafety protocols are adhered to in all specimen transport and management for study projects
  • Assists in the development of SOPs as needed for new study projects
  • Participates in quality control procedures
  • Maintains good record-keeping practices while adhering to quality and safety programs
  • Maintains accuracy and calibration of laboratory testing equipment
  • Performs routine inspections on laboratory equipment to determine when maintenance is required
  • Obtains and maintains current certification in good clinical practice and research ethics for human subjects research
  • Maintains IATA certification for shipping specimens
  • Follows hospital policies, procedures, and  safety, environmental, information technology, and infection control standards
  • Strictly adheres to study protocols, privacy standards, and research ethics board requirements
  • Other duties as assigned by Investigator or clinical research manager


  • Master’s degree in microbiology or immunology, or Bachelor’s with equivalent experience
  • At least 1 year experience in research; experience supporting clinical research preferred
  • Experience working with level 2 pathogens strongly preferred 
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and negotiating skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Highly proficient with MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, email, internet, and laboratory databases
  • Ability to work well as part of a multidisciplinary team
