POSITION OVERVIEW:

POSITION OVERVIEW:

As a Senior Research Accountant, your role is to perform a wide range of professional accounting activities requiring competent knowledge of accounting concepts, principles and practices. The position requires independent work under broad direction and within established accounting systems to handle specialized assignments including compliance reporting required by granting agencies. The Senior Accountant works as part of a team ensuring quality, accuracy and timeliness of financial information provided to various stakeholders both internal and external to the Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage complex institutional grants and infrastructure programs; assist with budget preparation for initial grant application and subsequent multi-year forecasts.
  • Coordination of external grant audit required by funding agencies.
  • Prepare annual and periodic financial statements and invoices for management review and subsequent submission to external granting agencies.
  • Perform analysis on a regular basis for assigned Principal Investigators portfolios and follow-up as required.
  • Monitor research activity to ensure compliance with research agreements and guidelines.
  • Assist research scientists and research institute administrators in review of account statements.
  • Prepare billings to granting agencies and follow-up on accounts receivable.
  • Cost centre set-up and subsequent maintenance: validity; budget update etc.
  • Prepare month-end closing journal entries; assist with other month-end closing procedures and analysis and review of balance sheet accounts.
  • Perform month-end closing tasks, such as adjusting grant budgets, inter-company billings and reconciliation, processing of quarterly/annual consolidated grant payments and overhead entries.
  • Preparation of monthly account reconciliations and review of assigned grants net position.
  • Liaison with internal/external clients as required.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff in research accounting, act as resource to them.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of University or College Degree in business or accounting
  • Completion of accounting designation required (CPA, CA, CPA, CGA, CPA, CMA)
  • Not-for-Profit or other Research experience preferred
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong understanding of internal control procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Access
  • Direct hands on experience with SAP
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure with tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record
