DEPARTMENT/ LAB DESCRIPTION
The Croitoru laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate mucosal inflammation as it relates to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. In this position the successful applicant will be conducting studies utilizing patient samples to examine the role of the immune system and microbiota in intestinal inflammation.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and his delegates, the candidate will be responsible for carrying out in vitro and in vivo experiments with supervision by senior lab members or in partnership with other technicians as needed. The work will include sample processing from human studies i.e., working with blood, urine, and stool; handling, aliquoting and storing samples with the aid of a database to catalogue samples and storage. The candidate will be held responsible for the accuracy and reliability of results. The candidate will also be expected to record and demonstrate quality assurance, sample integrity and reliable sample identify. Employee will help others in the lab with ongoing work as needed and with general lab maintenance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the organization of the laboratory daily, including ordering/ maintaining materials and supplies etc.
- The blood from humans or mice will be processed for serum, DNA extraction and isolation of fresh and viable peripheral blood mononuclear cells for future freezing.
- Responsible for moderately complex laboratory-based research activities involving performance of laboratory research tests, experiments, techniques, and procedures. May involve the interpretation of test results and experiments. Performs routine maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting on laboratory instruments.
- Collaborative mindset, able to follow instructions, and willing to work independently but also closely with other members of the team.
- Exercises considerable independent judgment, initiative and decision making in consultation with investigator to resolve matters relating to interpretation of test results, modification of techniques and procedures.
- Monitors and maintains lab’s chemical/ cell stocks and/ or equipment, as well as order supplies.
- Responsible for all activities related to receiving, shipping, and processing samples from individuals involved in clinical studies.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- At minimum, completion of a B.Sc. in a scientific discipline (Immunology, Molecular
- Biology, or a related field)
- 1-2 years of research laboratory experience
- Experience with handling human tissue, blood, urine and stool an asset.
- Responsible for organizing and maintaining sample databases, ensuring accurate and up to date records.
- Experience with flow cytometry would be an asset.
FUNCTIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have experience basic wet lab techniques (bacterial culture, DNA/RNA/protein isolation, agarose gels, etc.)
- Must possess exceptional communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) and be comfortable engaging and exchanging information with other members of the lab.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail.
- Experience with project management
- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques, such as PCR, ELISA, and cell culture.
- Demonstrated knowledge of standard software (e.g., LIMS, Microsoft Office Suite)
- Must demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance record.
- Must be flexible with work hours.
- Must be able to work flexible hours and work on your feet for hours at a time.

Safety Requirement
- Maintain personal certifications as required by Safety Office
- Maintain the lab’s Safety requirements as required by Safety Office
- Maintain current lab-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - including work with hazardous chemicals and biological agents, hazardous waste disposal, etc.
- Maintain the lab’s chemical Inventory
- Responsible for training the lab members on lab-specific procedures, weekly eye wash checks
