The Centre for Phenogenomics (TCP) is a state-of-the-art facility supporting research using mouse models of human disease and development. Services include animal husbandry, model production, clinical phenotyping, imaging, pathology, and mouse line cryopreservation, recovery, and distribution. TCP’s Pathology Core serves a multidisciplinary clientele with expert advice regarding a broad range of histological techniques. Excellent customer service is an essential part of our operation. We are looking for a Technician II to join our Gross Pathology and Histology team.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Technician II will independently perform mouse necropsies, organ dissection, blood collection by retro-orbital bleeding and cardiac puncture, perfusion fixation, gross and cut FFPE non-human animal tissues. The Technician II will provide expert consultation and training to academic and industry clients when required.

Other duties, including cryo-microtomy, performing routine histology stains and contributions to maintaining laboratory readiness, may also be required and appropriate cross-training will be provided. The Technician II must adhere to all documentation, regulations, protocols, and procedures of TCP’s Pathology Core and the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform grossing of fixed tissues and cutting of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples.
  • Perform appropriate mouse handling, anesthesia, necropsies, blood collection and specific organ dissection.
  • Maintain all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for procedures within the role.
  • Perform routine maintenance, maintain a Quality Control system for histology equipment, and troubleshoot any issues that might arise.
  • Be responsible for accessioning service requests and data entry into the Pathology Core’s Laboratory Information Management System.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • A BSc or equivalent training and experience in the life sciences.
  • A minimum of two years of experience with gross pathology and/or histology.
  • A results-driven team member with a proven ability to maintain a high level of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail with an ability to document work.
  • A self-starter with proven ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changes in schedules and priorities.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
  • Able to understand written and verbal directions in English.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new techniques, solve technical problems, troubleshoot, and optimize standard protocols.
  • Exceptional English verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED

  • Demonstrated knowledge of embryonic and adult mouse anatomy and histology.
  • RVT/VT certification.
  • RLAT certification.

 

 

If this role is in a laboratory environment, Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute’s Safety Requirements include:

  • Maintain personal certifications as required by Safety Office
  • Maintain the lab’s Safety requirements as required by Safety Office
  • Maintain current lab-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - including work with hazardous chemicals and biological agents, hazardous waste disposal, etc.
  • Maintain the lab’s chemical Inventory
  • Responsible for training the lab members on lab-specific procedures, weekly eye wash checks
