DEPARTMENT/ LAB DESCRIPTION

An opportunity is available for a full-time Research Technician II at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital. Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and the Project Manager, the incumbent will be working on ongoing projects related to genetics, microbiome and IBD research.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Technician II plays an integral role in managing the day-to-day operations of the lab and to provide technical support to the investigator and team members (including fellows & students).  The candidate may be required to work on specific projects designated by the investigator or Project Manager.  The candidate may be responsible for carrying out in vitro experiments independently under the guidance from senior lab members. Project(s) are generally outlined by the Investigator or Project Manager. 

The primary day to day work will include sample processing from human studies i.e. working with blood, biopsies, urine and stool; handling, processing, aliquoting and storing samples with the aid of a database to catalogue samples and storage. The work may also include cell isolation, primary cell culture, flow cytometry, and molecular biology.

The employee will be held responsible for the accuracy and reliability of sample extraction and results.  The employee will also be expected to record and demonstrate quality assurance, sample integrity and reliable sample identity. Employee will help others in the lab with ongoing work, as needed, and with general lab maintenance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision and independently, performs routine standardized techniques, procedures and experiments (e.g. collecting, processing, storing and distributing various specimens)
  • The blood from human participants will be processed for serum, DNA extraction and isolation of fresh and viable peripheral blood mononuclear cells for future freezing, flow cytometry or in vitro functional analysis.
  • Human stool samples and intestinal tissue will need to be processed and bacterial DNA extracted.
  • Extract RNA and miRNA from human blood, tissue and cell lines for transcriptomics
  • The applicant will be responsible for all activities related to receiving, shipping and processing samples from individuals involved in clinical studies and trials.
  • The employee will be held responsible for the accuracy and reliability of results.
  • Other duties include equipment maintenance, ordering, lab cleaning, electrophoresis, recording and maintenance of records of experimental protocols and results with basic computation and plotting.
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining lab chemical/cell stocks and/or lab equipment; orders and maintains inventories of supplies & equipment
  • Ensure equipment for clinical trials is properly maintained, logged and certified annually
  • Ensure laboratory is in compliance with PHAC guidelines for Biohazard Level 2 and follow GcLPs
  • Assist other lab members

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.Sc. in Molecular, Cellular Biology, Immunology or related field
  • 2 years of hands-on laboratory experience

FUNCTIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidate must be comfortable and willing to work on all human samples (blood, tissue, stool, urine, saliva).
  • Demonstrated experience in isolating DNA from eukaryotic or prokaryotic organisms and in isolating and purifying WBC from blood samples.
  • Experience with flow cytometry and cell sorting is an asset.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment, considerable independence and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy while multi-tasking.
  • Continue to acquire experience with molecular techniques (DNA/RNA isolation, purification, quantification, PCR, qPCR, Western blots, etc.)
  • Continue to develop skills with cell culture, microscopy and ELISAs
  • Must be versatile, flexible and self-motivated
  • Must be comfortable engaging and exchanging information with other lab members in the form of written reports and oral presentations.
  • Continue to develop analytical and problem solving abilities with strong attention to detail​
  • Continue to increase comfort and experience with data management
  • Continue to acquire knowledge of standard software (Microsoft Office, GraphPad, FlowJo, Image J)
  • Must demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance record
  • Must able to work flexible hours (some days will start very early and/or end very late) including the occasional weekend.
